Catalina Island is a beautiful island off of the California coast. The island itself is actually part of Long Beach County and abides by the laws and regulations of that county. As solid 60 minute boat ride to the island (15 min by helicopter) brings you to a secluded little getaway. Home of the old Chicago Cubs training camp, Rigley's field and mansion still consume part of the islands charm, but are accompanied by calming scenery and clear blue waters.

The Catalina Casino is not a real gambling casino, but rather a beautiful structure that was a live theater and gathering house. Still a main attraction the casino in a focal point between the main strip and the quaint Descanso Beach.

Points of Interest of Catalina

The island itself is 22 miles long and 8 miles across at the widest point. Its single highest point is Mount Orizaba reaching almost 2100 feet. Cataline Island is owned by the Catalina Island Conservancy which ensures its beauty and integrity is maintained for all of us to enjoy for many years to come.

The island experience here is somewhat unique in that typical automobiles are restricted. There is an approximate 14 year waiting list, so get used to the Catalina transportation method - by golf cart! It is very popular to rent golf carts for the day as well as motoring via bicycle or old fashioned foot work. Most attractions are in walking distance so enjoy the moment as you can take in every bit of the island as you gradually explore.

The only public area to visit is the city of Avalon which is most likley the area you arrive as the cruise ships, boat rides, or helicopter trips take you to their port. From Avalon there are a few beaches, including Descanso Beach. On the beach you can take advantage of a freshly mixed drink, local massage, grassy area for picnicing, or the actual beach.

On the opposite side of the island is Two Harbors, a resort village. You can look down into Two Harbors from the mountain tours which take you to the elevated airport. The tour is a wonderful experience allowing you to take site of the many aspects of wildlife on the island as well as the conserved landscape.
