Catalina Island Beaches

Are you planning for a romantic getaway this weekend? Are you thinking of extended vacation this summer? Catalina beaches are a picturesque setting, located off the Pacific Coast of California. The beaches at Catalina Island are the perfect island beaches for romantic couples or a family vacation.

The beaches are the main attraction of Catalina Island and they are breathtaking. The Catalina beaches bring calm sunny skies and crystal blue waters. The island is quaint, temperatures predictable, and sunsets are truly beautiful.

There are not many public beaches in Catalina Island, but of those that are can be found in the Avalon area. The city of Avalon boasts a few fine beaches with calm surf. The beaches in this protected side of Catalina have many amenities whether it is relaxation or excitement you want.

Below are few of the beaches in the city of Avalon:

Descanso Beach Club
The Descanso Beach Club is actually considered a private beach, but charges an extremely modest fee. The fee is primarily because of California law that alcohol can only be consumed at the beach if it is "private", meaning there is a fee for entry. This is one of the more popular beaches because it has many ammenities and is along the main strip. This beach also hosts the vast majority of wedding events on the island because of its fabulous location and stunning views.

Middle Beach
It is a scenic area on the left side of Green Pleasure Pier and right of Wrigley Plaza Stage. It is in the heart of the town and is popular for sunbathing and swimming. During the entire summer, the lifeguards are on duty on the beach. Shopping, restaurants, and restrooms are at a close distance away. At the foot of the Green Pleasure Pier is the visitor center where you can collect information about the many other things to do at Catalina Island.

South Beach
As you may expect it is on the south side of Green Pleasure Pier and is a popular beach for kids because of the swim float. At this beach you can rent equipment that can be used at other downtown beaches of Catalina Island.

Step Beach
This beach is just at the entrance of the Via Casino Walkway. The name of the beach comes from its feature of concrete steps with handrails leading to Avalon Bay's crystal clear waters.

Lover's Cove
Near the boat dock, the Lover's Cove is popular for snorkeling. It is known as the Undersea Gardens for its protected marine sanctuary. It is a home to a large population of fish and invertebrates. Brightly colored garibaldi fish are famously found here. At Lover's Cove diving is not allowed. The Cove has a beach called Pebbly Beach. It is named this for it beach consisting mostly of pebbles as opposed to sand. It is also famous for its glass bottom boat tours.

For all those tourists who love good waves, there are two such beaches, Ben Weston Beach and Shark Harbor, on Catalina's "backside". Even more beaches can be found on the windward side of Catalina Island offering enjoyments such beach camping. These are located from within the Two Harbors and Parson's Landing. Enjoy!
